Teaching in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: Compare the Working Week
Compare campuses, commutes, support and actual contract terms before choosing between Vietnam's two major cities.
Choosing between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is easier when you compare an ordinary working Tuesday rather than a holiday weekend. Both offer much to explore, but a city name cannot tell you whether a particular teaching job is suitable. Start with the school, the timetable and the journey you would repeat every day. Then consider the setting around them.
Put the actual workplace on a map
Ask for the address of every campus where you may teach. A job advertised under a familiar city name might involve journeys between several sites. Find out whether those journeys happen during paid hours, how transport is arranged and who covers the cost. A short distance on a map is not a reliable estimate of travel time.
Compare accommodation only after you understand this pattern. Try the route at the time your classes would begin and end, including an evening return if relevant. Consider a practical alternative for heavy rain. You do not need to rent a motorbike to demonstrate independence; choose transport you can use lawfully, safely and consistently.
Compare roles, not city reputations
Request a sample weekly schedule and a description of the learners. Teaching young children, supporting an exam class and teaching adults require different preparation. Ask about class size, curriculum, assessment, classroom support and how much planning time is included. Two employers within one city can differ more than two otherwise similar roles in different cities.
Avoid treating nationality categories as a measure of teaching ability or legal eligibility. Your qualifications, experience, proposed responsibilities and applicable authorization process need their own assessment. A recruiter cannot settle these questions simply by saying that a city has demand for teachers. Read our work-authorization overview before committing to a start date.
Think about the life around work
Hanoi's visitor highlights include the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and a substantial cultural scene. Ho Chi Minh City's central landmarks, markets and neighbourhoods offer a different urban setting. These are useful possibilities for free time, not descriptions of every residential area or promises about how you will feel living there.
Make a personal list of things you would use weekly: groceries, a quiet study space, exercise, healthcare, a language class and contact with friends. Check their locations against a realistic housing shortlist. Visit at different times if possible. Noise, building access, fire exits and the ability to sleep before an early class deserve more attention than a photogenic balcony.
Build two comparable budgets
Use current written quotes rather than an online claim that one city is always cheaper. Include rent, deposit, utilities, transport, insurance, food and document-related costs. Keep one-off moving expenses separate from recurring spending. Ask when the first salary payment would arrive and what happens if the approved starting date changes.
Compare the contract's actual pay structure, not just the largest headline number. Clarify gross versus take-home amounts, paid hours, cancellations and deductions. Do not budget around overtime, bonuses or a full timetable that has not been guaranteed in writing. Leave a reserve for delays and for leaving an unsuitable arrangement.
Make the decision reversible where possible
Temporary accommodation can give you time to inspect a neighbourhood without signing a long lease remotely. Record unanswered questions before accepting the role, and request written answers from the employer. The better choice is the combination you can verify, not the city that wins someone else's ranking. Our teaching information can help structure that conversation without promising placement or earnings.
